Believe It or Not Week 3 Tuesday

The heavens proclaim the glory of God. The skies display his craftsmanship. Psalm 19:1

A few years ago, I learned how to knit. I was not great at it, but eventually, I knitted a scarf. I am so proud of that scarf! Here is the thing about this scarf, it is the most simple, basic scarf you have probably ever seen. Why? Because of my skills as a knitter. Ultimately, all created things point to their creator, for better or worse. Because God created this world and everything in it, all creation points to God as the intelligent designer. From the top of the Sandia Mountains to the oceans covering the earth, God created the world and everything in it. The complexity and beauty of everything in creation point to Him, the Intelligent Designer.

Scripture makes it clear that God’s design and intention are evident throughout creation. David wrote in Psalm 19, “The heavens proclaim the glory of God. The skies display his craftsmanship” (verse 1). He continued by writing, “Day after day they continue to speak; night after night they make him known. They speak without a sound or word; their voice is never heard” (verses 2-3). David’s word-picture in these verses is crystal clear. Creation points to its Intelligent Designer. It’s beautiful to think about, isn’t it? Without saying a word, creation points directly to God. We all have seen sunsets that are so beautiful that God must have created them. All of these things point us straight to God.

While this was just David writing about creation pointing to God, it was discovered later that stars emit sound. Elizabeth Landau writes in an article called Symphony of Stars: The Science of Stellar Sound Waves that while we can’t hear them with our ears, there is a symphony taking place. She says that the larger stars are like tubas, and the small stars are high-pitched. How incredible is that! Once again, humanity has discovered what Scripture already knew.

My friend, there is too much intention behind the giggle of a baby, the bright colors of a sunset, and the beauty of the first snowfall to believe that there is no creator behind it. No, all of the beauty surrounding us points to God, our Intelligent Designer.

Moving toward action

Go on a walk today. Walk slowly and intentionally, noticing the beauty of creation all around you. If you would like, play your favorite worship music while you notice. Then, as you admire the beauty all around you, reflect on God and how everything you are looking at points to Him, the Intelligent Designer.

Going Deeper

Psalm 19:1-14 (NLT)

The heavens proclaim the glory of God.

The skies display his craftsmanship.

Day after day they continue to speak;

night after night they make him known.

They speak without a sound or word;

their voice is never heard.

Yet their message has gone throughout the earth,

and their words to all the world.

God has made a home in the heavens for the sun.

It bursts forth like a radiant bridegroom after his wedding.

It rejoices like a great athlete eager to run the race.

The sun rises at one end of the heavens

and follows its course to the other end.

Nothing can hide from its heat.

The instructions of the Lord are perfect,

reviving the soul.

The decrees of the Lord are trustworthy,

making wise the simple.

The commandments of the Lord are right,

bringing joy to the heart.

The commands of the Lord are clear,

giving insight for living.

Reverence for the Lord is pure,

lasting forever.

The laws of the Lord are true;

each one is fair.

They are more desirable than gold,

even the finest gold.

They are sweeter than honey,

even honey dripping from the comb.

They are a warning to your servant,

a great reward for those who obey them.

How can I know all the sins lurking in my heart?

Cleanse me from these hidden faults.

Keep your servant from deliberate sins!

Don’t let them control me.

Then I will be free of guilt

and innocent of great sin.

May the words of my mouth

and the meditation of my heart

be pleasing to you,

O Lord, my rock and my redeemer.
