Believe It Or Not Week 6: Friday

Your word is a lamp to guide my feet and a light for my path. Psalm 119:105

Walking through a dark room with no light can be terrifying. It almost forces you to take the posture of a zombie walking slowly, shuffling your feet, with your arms stretched out. Chairs, tables, and stuffed animals quickly become objects that can trip you up if you are not careful. Your heart begins to beat quickly as you feel the weight of what might be lurking in the dark. When you can’t see where your feet are stepping, it creates an environment of fear.

Unfortunately, so many people in this world live their lives like they are walking through a dark room. Their steps are uncertain and unsure as they try to make sense of their world. They cannot see what is in the darkness, so they live in an anxious and fearful state. Interestingly, God never wanted us to live that way. Instead, He wanted us to find peace and direction by looking to His Word even in the darkness.

When we look to the Bible for direction, we find that it shines a light on what path we should take. In fact, in ancient times, they used to take oil lamps, and they would tie them on their shoes or sandals so they could see where they were walking. These primitive flashlights allowed them to navigate their surroundings. Even today, we use flashlights on a hike or when the power goes out so we can find the right path. The Bible serves as our light as we navigate this dark world that we live in. Without it, we wander aimlessly in the dark.

No matter what you are facing right now, it might be time that you look to God’s word for direction. Beyond just reading this daily devotional, the hope is that you would use the Bible to lead you and inform every decision you make. So let God light your path today!

Moving Toward Action

The interesting thing about a flashlight that you buy that is only a couple of dollars is that it limits the area you can see in the dark. You may only be able to see 10 feet in front of you, but beyond that is unclear. The same also may be true of the way God directs us. You might not see 5-10 years down the road where He is leading you, but He gives you enough light so you can follow His path. How can you look to His word daily for direction in light of how God leads? What are some steps from the Bible that God is calling you to take today?

Going Deeper

Psalm 119:97-112 (NLT)

Oh, how I love your instructions!

I think about them all day long.

Your commands make me wiser than my enemies,

for they are my constant guide.

Yes, I have more insight than my teachers,

for I am always thinking of your laws.

I am even wiser than my elders,

for I have kept your commandments.

I have refused to walk on any evil path,

so that I may remain obedient to your word.

I haven’t turned away from your regulations,

for you have taught me well.

How sweet your words taste to me;

they are sweeter than honey.

Your commandments give me understanding;

no wonder I hate every false way of life.

Your word is a lamp to guide my feet

and a light for my path.

I’ve promised it once, and I’ll promise it again:

I will obey your righteous regulations.

I have suffered much, O Lord;

restore my life again as you promised.

Lord, accept my offering of praise,

and teach me your regulations.

My life constantly hangs in the balance,

but I will not stop obeying your instructions.

The wicked have set their traps for me,

but I will not turn from your commandments.

Your laws are my treasure;

they are my heart’s delight.

I am determined to keep your decrees

to the very end.
