Clue: Week 1 - Monday

We proclaim to you what we ourselves have actually seen and heard so that you may have fellowship with us. And our fellowship is with the Father and with his Son, Jesus Christ. 1 John 1:3

I want to be a trustworthy person. I want people to be able to trust that what I say is true. It is important to me that people know that they can believe and depend on me. I have a feeling that it is important to you, too. Because of this desire, I tell the truth. I do what I say I will do. I am true to my word. I do my best to live a life that reflects my trustworthiness. Today, we are going to see that the desire to be seen as trustworthy is from God. He wants us to know that He, above all, can be trusted. And when He teaches us about salvation, He wants us to trust that we will receive eternal life if we place our faith in Him.

The book of 1 John was written for believers in Christ, so that they would be confident in their salvation in Him. We know this because the last chapter of the book tells us. "I have written this to you who believe in the name of the Son of God," John writes, "so that you may know you have eternal life" (1 John 5:13). When doubt threatens to creep into our lives, and in a world where many things are constantly changing, the book of 1 John serves to give believers peace and confidence.

In an effort to encourage believers in their faith in Christ, John wanted them to know that he was writing the book of 1 John about his firsthand experiences. "We proclaim to you what we ourselves have actually seen and heard so that you may have fellowship with us," John wrote (1 John 1:3). John was bringing the people a message from God, he wanted them to know that what he was telling them was reliable, and so was their faith.

My friend, I hope you find comfort in the message of 1 John today. You can have confidence in your faith and your salvation. God never intended you to live in doubt or fear. His word, and your faith, is trustworthy and reliable. Take comfort in that today.

Moving Toward Action

How precious is it that God wants us to be secure in our relationship with Him? He never wants us to question our salvation in Him. Spend some time reading the Going Deeper portion of this Scripture slowly and out loud. Spend time reflecting on the truth found in these verses. Then, take time to thank God for giving you confidence in your salvation if you have placed your faith in Him.

Going Deeper

Read 1 John 1:1-4 (NLT)

We proclaim to you the one who existed from the beginning, whom we have heard and seen. We saw him with our own eyes and touched him with our own hands. He is the Word of life. This one who is life itself was revealed to us, and we have seen him. And now we testify and proclaim to you that he is the one who is eternal life. He was with the Father, and then he was revealed to us. We proclaim to you what we ourselves have actually seen and heard so that you may have fellowship with us. And our fellowship is with the Father and with his Son, Jesus Christ. We are writing these things so that you may fully share our joy.
