Dead End Desperation Week 2: Wednesday

"He replied, “What is impossible for people is possible with God.” Luke 18:27

There is a word used to describe Jesus, “omnipotent.” It means “all-powerful.” Simply put, God can do anything. Nothing is out of reach for Him. Nothing is too great or too difficult for Him. Because of this, we can be confident in anything He leads us to and calls us to do as He gives us opportunities to make him known and have an impact. We are not left to our own devices. The God of the universe, who is all-powerful, is with us and working through us.

Throughout Scripture, we read about God’s power. God created the world simply by speaking. He parted seas, healed diseases, and even raised the dead. Indeed He can do anything. Jesus spoke about God’s power in Luke 18. He was having a conversation with a religious leader. This religious leader asked, “What should I do to inherit eternal life” (verse 18). Jesus responded by naming some commandments found in the Old Testament. The young man responded, “I have obeyed all these commandments since I was young” (verse 21). He thought he certainly had done enough to get into heaven. Next, Jesus told him, “There is still one thing you haven’t done. Sell all your possessions and give the money to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven. Then come, follow me” (verse 22). At this, the man walked away, “very sad” because “he was wealthy” (verse 23). After this happened, Jesus said, “How hard it is for the rich to enter the Kingdom of God. It is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle than for a rich person to enter the Kingdom of God!” (verses 24-25). Let’s pause here. A camel is enormous. The eye of a needle is very small. Therefore, a camel can’t walk through the eye of a needle. The people listening heard Jesus say this, “Then who in the world can be saved?” (verse 26). Jesus responded by making a profound statement, “What is impossible for people is possible with God” (verse 27). In other words, God can do anything, and the impossible is possible with him.

We must never underestimate God’s power, friends. He can do anything. When we step out to do what He has called us to do, we can be confident in His power He has given each one of us to make Him known and point others to Christ. While different things he calls us to may feel impossible, we can be confident that “what is impossible for people is possible with God.”

Moving toward action

In your journal, notebook, or even a notecard, write down Luke 18:27. As you write these words, reflect on them. Reflect on the truth that all things are possible with God because of His power and strength. Let the truth of this Scripture embolden you and encourage you as you seek to have an impact for Him.

Going Deeper

 Luke 18:18-27 (NLT)

" A certain ruler asked him, “Good teacher, what must I do to inherit eternal life?”

19 “Why do you call me good?” Jesus answered. “No one is good—except God alone. 20 You know the commandments: ‘You shall not commit adultery, you shall not murder, you shall not steal, you shall not give false testimony, honor your father and mother.’”

21 “All these I have kept since I was a boy,” he said.

22 When Jesus heard this, he said to him, “You still lack one thing. Sell everything you have and give to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven. Then come, follow me.”

23 When he heard this, he became very sad, because he was very wealthy. 24 Jesus looked at him and said, “How hard it is for the rich to enter the kingdom of God! 25 Indeed, it is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle than for someone who is rich to enter the kingdom of God.”

26 Those who heard this asked, “Who then can be saved?”

27 Jesus replied, “What is impossible with man is possible with God.”
