Forgotten War: Week 6 - Thursday

Give your burdens to the Lord, and He will take care of you. He will not permit the godly to slip and fall. Psalm 55:22

We have a God who has given us full access to Him. He doesn't sit far off when we go through problems or storms. He is right by our side. Putting on our spiritual armor daily means that I reassure myself that God is close to me. Putting on the Helmet of Salvation is my way of holding onto the truths instead of embracing Satan's lies.

Staying consistent in prayer helps us to hold the essential truth that God is with us in our minds. Here are four ways that you can be more consistent in your prayer life:
Pick a Time - Have a time that you pray every day for an extended period. You should be looking to God for help all day long, but there should be a time in your day where you are giving God your full attention. If you're a morning person, it could be when you first wake up. If you're ready and engaged at night, you might want to wind down your day with prayer.
Keep a Journal - Journals are important to track the things that you have been praying for over the previous days. By keeping a journal, you can celebrate all the different ways that God comes through on your behalf. If you have trouble staying focused in your prayers, write them out in a journal. This will keep you focused and on track in your time alone with God.
Visualize talking to God - When you pray, don't let your mind bounce around like a pinball. Instead, visualize coming into the presence of God. Imagine coming before the very throne room of the King and bowing down before Him in reverence. He cares for you and gives you this opportunity through Jesus.
Get Some Friends - Praying alone is important as you develop your own relationship with God, but it is also critical that you pray in groups. Matthew 18 talks about how Jesus is present when two or more are gathered in His name. If you're not in a small group, it is time to get the accountability that you need to grow closer to Jesus.

When you pray, don't forget that God cares for your every need. He is able to answer some of the requests that might seem absurd. As a loving Father, He loves to take care of His children.

Moving Toward Action

Give one week to set a consistent prayer time for yourself. Open up your calendar and block out 15-30 minutes for you to spend time in focused prayer. Make sure it is a time where you have energy and are not sleepy. This way, you can make yourself fully present in your conversation with God. Try this out for one week and see how it changes your relationship with God.

Going Deeper

Read Psalm 55:16-23 (NLT)

But I will call on God,
    and the Lord will rescue me.
Morning, noon, and night
    I cry out in my distress,
    and the Lord hears my voice.
He ransoms me and keeps me safe
    from the battle waged against me,
    though many still oppose me.
God, who has ruled forever,
    will hear me and humble them. Interlude
For my enemies refuse to change their ways;
    they do not fear God.

As for my companion, he betrayed his friends;
    he broke his promises.
His words are as smooth as butter,
    but in his heart is war.
His words are as soothing as lotion,
    but underneath are daggers!

Give your burdens to the Lord,
    and he will take care of you.
    He will not permit the godly to slip and fall.

But you, O God, will send the wicked
    down to the pit of destruction.
Murderers and liars will die young,
    but I am trusting you to save me.
