Greater Than Week 1 Saturday

And I am convinced that nothing can ever separate us from God’s love. Neither death nor life, neither angels nor demons, neither our fears for today nor our worries about tomorrow—not even the powers of hell can separate us from God’s love. Romans 8:35a

This week, we have been reminded that God is for us. He is on our side, fighting for our spiritual growth and to have a thriving relationship with us. Because God loves us, He is for us, and there is absolutely nothing that can separate us from His love, not even death.

As Paul considered the depth of Christ’s love, he asked the question, “Can anything ever separate us from Christ’s love?” (Romans 8:35). As with many of Paul’s other rhetorical questions, the unspoken answer was “no.” Paul taught that neither the highest height nor the deepest depth and neither life nor death has the power to separate us from the great love of God.

The incredible truth from Romans 8 about God’s love does not mean we will never face pain. Paul must have understood that we might be tempted to question God’s love when we face pain and difficult times. In response to this, he wrote that in our hardest times that “victory is ours through Christ” (verse 37). Because of this, Paul concluded, “I am convinced that nothing can ever separate us from God’s love. Neither death nor life, neither angels nor demons, neither our fears for today nor our worries about tomorrow—not even the powers of hell can separate us from God’s love” (verse 38).

God simply loves us, and nothing can change that truth. We will never do anything to make Him love us less. His love for us remains undaunted through thick and thin. After all, 1 John 4 explains that God, Himself, is love. If God is love, we can be confident in His love throughout our entire lives and throughout whatever we face. May you and I revel in the great, unchanging, never-ending love of God today and find hope, peace, and rest.

MOVING TOWARD ACTION

Read the verses from the Going Deeper portion of this devotion two times. The first time, read slowly and deliberately. The second time, read the words out loud. As you read, marvel at the great love of God that is stronger than any other thing in this world and in eternity. Nothing can separate us from God’s love.

GOING DEEPER

Read Romans 8:31-39(NLT)

What, then, shall we say in response to these things? If God is for us, who can be against us? He who did not spare his own Son, but gave him up for us all—how will he not also, along with him, graciously give us all things? Who will bring any charge against those whom God has chosen? It is God who justifies. Who then is the one who condemns? No one. Christ Jesus who died—more than that, who was raised to life—is at the right hand of God and is also interceding for us. Who shall separate us from the love of Christ? Shall trouble or hardship or persecution or famine or nakedness or danger or sword? As it is written:

“For your sake we face death all day long;
we are considered as sheep to be slaughtered.”

No, in all these things we are more than conquerors through him who loved us. For I am convinced that neither death nor life, neither angels nor demons, neither the present nor the future, nor any powers, neither height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God that is in Christ Jesus our Lord.
