Hall of Faith Week 2 Wednesday

Noah was a righteous man, the only blameless person living on earth at the time, and he walked in close fellowship with God. Genesis 6:9

When thinking about people of faith found in Scripture, Noah certainly stands out. In a world where sin and wickedness were rampant, Noah lived differently. He did not give in to the wickedness that the rest of the world was participating in. Instead, he obeyed God and lived obediently, unafraid to call out the sin around him.

We can read about Noah's faith in Genesis 6. We learn in this chapter of Genesis that in a world where everyone was living wickedly, "Noah was a righteous man, the only blameless person living on earth at the time, and he walked in close fellowship with God” (verse 9). When God observed the unrighteousness that had taken over the world, He was grieved and planned to wipe out the earth with a flood. There was one exception, however, and that was Noah. Because Noah was righteous and walked obediently with God, God decided to warn Noah and his family, instructing them to build an ark that would save their lives from the incoming flood. In faith, Noah obeyed God’s command. After God’s instruction to Noah, Genesis 6:22 tells us that “Noah did everything exactly as God had commanded him.” Noah’s obedience to God was unwavering.

When I look back at Noah's life and his faithfulness, it is his obedience to God that stands out. He lived an obedient life, following God and walking closely with Him even when the rest of the world ridiculed this path. Not only this, but Noah also obeyed God when the instruction must have seemed strange and confusing. He built the ark and did everything God told him to do. This must have required great faith, especially because this meant building a boat that was not close to an ocean or river!

What we learn from the life of Noah is that great faith requires obedience. It requires that we live lives that honor God, even if everyone around us is not. The great news about this is that if we have placed our faith in Him, The Holy Spirit will aid us in this quest to live faithful, obedient lives that honor God.

Moving Toward Action

Take a few moments to pray. As you pray, tell God you desire to live a faithful life, obeying Him and His word. Invite The Holy Spirit to walk with you as you seek to obey and honor Him through your faithfulness.

Going Deeper

Read Genesis 6:9-22 (NLT)

This is the account of Noah and his family.

Noah was a righteous man, blameless among the people of his time, and he walked faithfully with God. Noah had three sons: Shem, Ham and Japheth.

Now the earth was corrupt in God’s sight and was full of violence. God saw how corrupt the earth had become, for all the people on earth had corrupted their ways. So God said to Noah, “I am going to put an end to all people, for the earth is filled with violence because of them. I am surely going to destroy both them and the earth. So make yourself an ark of cypress wood; make rooms in it and coat it with pitch inside and out. This is how you are to build it: The ark is to be three hundred cubits long, fifty cubits wide and thirty cubits high. Make a roof for it, leaving below the roof an opening one cubit high all around. Put a door in the side of the ark and make lower, middle and upper decks. I am going to bring floodwaters on the earth to destroy all life under the heavens, every creature that has the breath of life in it. Everything on earth will perish. But I will establish my covenant with you, and you will enter the ark—you and your sons and your wife and your sons’ wives with you. You are to bring into the ark two of all living creatures, male and female, to keep them alive with you. Two of every kind of bird, of every kind of animal and of every kind of creature that moves along the ground will come to you to be kept alive. You are to take every kind of food that is to be eaten and store it away as food for you and for them.”

Noah did everything just as God commanded him.
