Monsoon: Week 3 - Friday

Our God is in the heavens, and He does as He wishes. Psalm 115:3

As humans, we can make all the plans and determine all of the steps necessary to make those plans happen but try as we might, our plans are fickle. We have certainly seen lately that we are not in control, and things in our lives can change overnight. We can make plans, but we have to hold our plans in tension because they may have to change, or they may not actually happen. I have good news for you. Scripture teaches us that God's plans are different than our plans. While our plans are fickle, God's plans are final. While we have to be flexible with our plans, God is faithful to carry out His plans. Psalm 115 reminds us of this truth.

In Psalm 115, the Psalmist asks a question, "Why let the nations say, 'Where is their God?'" (verse 2). He then adds that "Our God is in the heavens, and He does as He wishes" (verse 3). In other words, God does what He wants. He is in control. Everything He wants and plans will come to pass. Even when it seems like all hope is lost, God is working. We can trust that His plans will be fulfilled. You may be thinking right now, "How do I know that His plans are good for me?" Look no further than Romans 8:28, which says, "And we know that God causes everything to work together for the good of those who love God and are called according to His purpose for them." You see, God works everything together for our good and His glory, even in, especially in, suffering. We can trust that His plans will benefit us and ultimately bring Him glory.

My friend, throughout whatever monsoon you are facing in your life, take comfort in the fact that God is in control. His plans will be fulfilled. He is working everything out for good, yes, even everything. Praise God for His care, power, and provision in our lives.

Moving Toward Action

Take time today to go on a walk. As you take time observing God's creation all around you, remember that His plans are final, and He will be faithful to carry out all of His plans to completion. Find a good place to pause on your walk and re-read Psalm 115:1-18, remembering that He is in control of your life, and He is working in your life in ways you may not even realize.

Going Deeper

Read Psalm 115:1-18 (NLT)

Not to us, O Lord, not to us,
but to your name goes all the glory
for your unfailing love and faithfulness.
Why let the nations say,
    “Where is their God?”
Our God is in the heavens,
and he does as he wishes.
Their idols are merely things of silver and gold,
    shaped by human hands.
They have mouths but cannot speak,
    and eyes but cannot see.
They have ears but cannot hear,
    and noses but cannot smell.
They have hands but cannot feel,
    and feet but cannot walk,
and throats but cannot make a sound.
And those who make idols are just like them,
as are all who trust in them.

O Israel, trust the Lord!
He is your helper and your shield.
O priests, descendants of Aaron, trust the Lord!
He is your helper and your shield.
All you who fear the Lord, trust the Lord!
He is your helper and your shield.

The Lord remembers us and will bless us.
He will bless the people of Israel
and bless the priests, the descendants of Aaron.
He will bless those who fear the Lord,
    both great and lowly.

May the Lord richly bless
    both you and your children.
May you be blessed by the Lord,
    who made heaven and earth.
The heavens belong to the Lord,
but he has given the earth to all humanity.
The dead cannot sing praises to the Lord,
for they have gone into the silence of the grave.
But we can praise the Lord
    both now and forever!

Praise the Lord!
