Text Week 2 Thursday

“Then, after doing all those things, I will pour out My Spirit upon all people. Your sons and daughters will prophesy. Your old men will dream dreams, and your young men will see visions. In those days, I will pour out My Spirit even on servants—men and women alike. Joel 2:28-29

As we read the Old Testament, we read many prophecies about what was to come, many of which centered around the coming of a Savior, Jesus Christ. Throughout the Old Testament and for 400 years after the last book of the Bible was written, the people of God waited for the coming Messiah. Finally, after years of waiting, Jesus came, bringing in a new day. Many of the Old Testament prophecies were fulfilled with the coming of Jesus in the New Testament, including the coming of the Holy Spirit among believers.

One of the Old Testament Scriptures that prophesies about the coming of the Holy Spirit is Joel 2:28-29. The prophecy says, “Then, after doing all those things, I will pour out My Spirit upon all people. Your sons and daughters will prophesy. Your old men will dream dreams, and your young men will see visions. In those days, I will pour out My Spirit even on servants—men and women alike.” When the Holy Spirit was to come, Joel prophesied, men and women would prophesy. This prophecy came to fulfillment in Acts 2. In this chapter, the Holy Spirit came upon followers of Christ. What looked like flames settled on all of the believers when this happened, and they began speaking in languages other than their own. People around who spoke other languages heard their teaching and were amazed. Many placed their faith in Christ that day. From that moment forward, the Holy Spirit began to indwell believers. All of these things happened as predicted in the Old Testament.

The fulfillment of this Old Testament prophecy is one of many Old Testament prophecies that were fulfilled. It is these prophecies that are further evidence that Scripture is indeed reliable. God keeps each promise to us.

MOVING TOWARD ACTION

Take a few moments to read about the prophecy of the coming of the Holy Spirit in Joel 2:28-32. After reading, list out the promises listed in the prophesies found in these verses. Next, read about the fulfillment of this prophecy in Acts 2:1-21. After reading, make a list of the things that happened when this prophecy was fulfilled, and the Holy Spirit came. When your list is complete, compare it with the first list you made, comparing the prophecy with the fulfillment of the prophecy. Take note of how God fulfilled this prophecy when the Holy Spirit indwelled believers hundreds and hundreds of years later. Thank God for the gift of the Holy Spirit and for being a promise-keeping God.

GOING DEEPER

Read Joel 2:28-32(NLT)

“Then, after doing all those things,
I will pour out my Spirit upon all people.
Your sons and daughters will prophesy.
Your old men will dream dreams,
and your young men will see visions.

In those days I will pour out my Spirit
even on servants—men and women alike.

And I will cause wonders in the heavens and on the earth—
blood and fire and columns of smoke.

The sun will become dark,
and the moon will turn blood red
before that great and terrible[f] day of the Lord arrives.

But everyone who calls on the name of the Lord
will be saved,

for some on Mount Zion in Jerusalem will escape,
just as the Lord has said.

These will be among the survivors
whom the Lord has called.
