My Name Is: Week 4 Study

BIG IDEA

In continuation of our study on the names of God, today, we are talking about a name for Jesus found in Scripture: Christ. We will see the significance of His name. Additionally, we will see that now that Christ has returned to heaven, we are His representatives on earth who get to point others to Him. He has called us and equipped us to make Him known to everyone around us.

2. Read Luke 4:16-21. What was the significance of Jesus' anointing by the Spirit?

Luke 4:16-21

When he came to the village of Nazareth, his boyhood home, he went as usual to the synagogue on the Sabbath and stood up to read the Scriptures. The scroll of Isaiah the prophet was handed to him. He unrolled the scroll and found the place where this was written:

“The Spirit of the Lord is upon me,
for he has anointed me to bring Good News to the poor.
He has sent me to proclaim that captives will be released,
    that the blind will see,
that the oppressed will be set free,
and that the time of the Lord’s favor has come.

He rolled up the scroll, handed it back to the attendant, and sat down. All eyes in the synagogue looked at him intently. Then he began to speak to them. “The Scripture you’ve just heard has been fulfilled this very day!”

3. How was Jesus the fulfillment of the promise found in the verses He read from Isaiah in Luke 4:21?

Luke 4:21

Then he began to speak to them. “The Scripture you’ve just heard has been fulfilled this very day!”

4. Read Matthew 16:13-20. Why was Peter's answer to Jesus' question here so important?

Matthew 16:13-20

When Jesus came to the region of Caesarea Philippi, he asked his disciples, “Who do people say that the Son of Man is?”

“Well,” they replied, “some say John the Baptist, some say Elijah, and others say Jeremiah or one of the other prophets.”

Then he asked them, “But who do you say I am?”

Simon Peter answered, “You are the Messiah, the Son of the living God.”

Jesus replied, “You are blessed, Simon son of John, because my Father in heaven has revealed this to you. You did not learn this from any human being. Now I say to you that you are Peter (which means ‘rock’), and upon this rock I will build my church, and all the powers of hell will not conquer it. And I will give you the keys of the Kingdom of Heaven. Whatever you forbid on earth will be forbidden in heaven, and whatever you permit on earth will be permitted in heaven.”

Then he sternly warned the disciples not to tell anyone that he was the Messiah.

7. Are there any areas of your life that are holding you back from honoring Christ?

MOVING FORWARD

Because we have been anointed by the Holy Spirit, you and I must carry out the service and message of Christ. Are you prepared to share with those around you about Christ? Take a few minutes to pair up with one other person in your group. Tell your partner your two-minute story and then listen to theirs. After you have each shared your two-minute story, take turns practicing the bridge diagram. This is one way you can be best equipped to share your faith with the lost people in your life.

Isaiah 9:6

For a child is born to us,
a son is given to us.
The government will rest on his shoulders.
    And he will be called:
Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God,
    Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace.
