Big God, Little Me: Week 1 - Friday

For the Lord sees clearly what a man does, examining every path he takes. Proverbs 5:21

During the weekend message, we were reminded that the truth that God sees everything and is everywhere is a sobering thought. Indeed, if God sees everything and knows everything, that means that He not only sees our moments of obedience. He also sees our sin. He sees our unkind words, our mistreatment of others, and all of the other sinful thoughts and actions we have carried. The truth is, there is no hiding from God.

The writer of Proverbs 5 warned that there is no hiding our sins from God because He sees our sins. He wrote in this passage of Scripture, "The Lord sees clearly what a man does, examining every path he takes" (verse 21). This verse is a sobering reminder that there is absolutely no hiding our sins from God. He sees the very depths of our sinful hearts. Even more, our sin has consequences. That is why the writer of Proverbs 5 continued his warning about sin by saying, "an evil man is held captive by his own sins; they are ropes that catch and hold him. He will die for lack of self-control; he will be lost because of his great foolishness” (verses 22-23). Sin has grave consequences. It leads to pain and struggles here on this earth. It also leads to death and eternal life separated from Him. God is infinitely aware of our sin, my friend. We will never get away with any of our sins. God sees. We will also face the consequences of our sins that we choose to commit.

The truth that we cannot hide from our sin because God sees it all is bleak, but it is essential to remember. We will face the consequences for every sin that we commit. We are not without hope, however. You see, God did not see our sin and leave us alone in our sin. He did something about the sin problem He saw. He sent Jesus to come to earth and pay the price for our sin so that we can experience eternal life with Him forever if we place our faith in Him. Luke 19:10 says it this way, "the Son of Man came to seek and save those who are lost." Praise God for not only seeing our sin but also doing something about it.

Moving Toward Action

Take time today to thank God for the forgiveness of sin that is available through Jesus Christ. Thank Him that because of the blood of Jesus, He offers hope, forgiveness, and life. Praise Him for not leaving us alone and lost in our sin. He is a God who stopped at nothing to rescue humanity, even where we were lost in sin.

Going Deeper

Proverbs 5:1-23

1My son, pay attention to my wisdom;
    listen carefully to my wise counsel.
Then you will show discernment,
    and your lips will express what you’ve learned.
For the lips of an immoral woman are as sweet as honey,
    and her mouth is smoother than oil.
But in the end she is as bitter as poison,
    as dangerous as a double-edged sword.
Her feet go down to death;
    her steps lead straight to the grave.
For she cares nothing about the path to life.
    She staggers down a crooked trail and doesn’t realize it.

So now, my sons, listen to me.
    Never stray from what I am about to say:
Stay away from her!
    Don’t go near the door of her house!
If you do, you will lose your honor
    and will lose to merciless people all you have achieved.
10 Strangers will consume your wealth,
    and someone else will enjoy the fruit of your labor.
11 In the end you will groan in anguish
    when disease consumes your body.
12 You will say, “How I hated discipline!
    If only I had not ignored all the warnings!
13 Oh, why didn’t I listen to my teachers?
    Why didn’t I pay attention to my instructors?
14 I have come to the brink of utter ruin,
    and now I must face public disgrace.”

15 Drink water from your own well—
    share your love only with your wife.
16 Why spill the water of your springs in the streets,
    having sex with just anyone?
17 You should reserve it for yourselves.
    Never share it with strangers.

18 Let your wife be a fountain of blessing for you.
    Rejoice in the wife of your youth.
19 She is a loving deer, a graceful doe.
    Let her breasts satisfy you always.
    May you always be captivated by her love.
20 Why be captivated, my son, by an immoral woman,
    or fondle the breasts of a promiscuous woman?

21 For the Lord sees clearly what a man does,
    examining every path he takes.
22 An evil man is held captive by his own sins;
    they are ropes that catch and hold him.
23 He will die for lack of self-control;
    he will be lost because of his great foolishness.
