You go before me and follow me. You place your hand of blessing on my head. Psalm 139:5
We began a new series called “Big God, Little Me" this weekend, where we are trading a small view of God for the truth that God is able to accomplish exceedingly, abundantly more than anything we could imagine. This week, we looked at two attributes of God: God is everywhere and God knows everything. Today, we are going to talk about the first attribute: God is everywhere. This means that there is no place on earth where God is not. And that, my friends, is a very, very good thing.
David wrote about God’s omnipresence, an attribute that means all-present, in Psalm 139. This Psalm is a deeply personal and insightful Psalm from the heart of David. In this Psalm, David marveled at the truth that God is everywhere and that there was nowhere he could be that God was not. He wrote, “You go before me and follow me” (verse 5). David understood that not only did God guide him, but God was also behind him. He elaborated on this truth by saying, "I can never escape from your Spirit! I can never get away from your presence!" (verse 7). David understood that there was no escaping or fleeing from God's presence. God was always with him, every step of the way. From the highest mountain to the lowest valley, God was there. As he considered the truth that God was always with Him every moment of every day, David invited God to search and know him. He wrote, "Search me, O God, and know my heart" (verse 23). In light of God's omnipresence, David invited God to search and know Him because he knew that being in the presence of an all-present and all-knowing God was a very good thing.
Just like God was with David every moment of every day, He is with you. There is nowhere you could go that He is not there. May you find great comfort in this knowledge. Take heart in the truth that God will never leave you for a second of your life.
In your journal or a notebook, write out Psalm 139:5. As you write, reflect on the truth of the words you are writing. Next, reflect on the truth that God is always everywhere. What feelings does this truth bring about? Does it bring comfort? Does it give you confidence? After reflecting on this truth, finish your journaling by praying. Thank God that He is with you every single day.
Psalm 139:1-12
1 O Lord, you have examined my heart and know everything about me. 2 You know when I sit down or stand up. You know my thoughts even when I’m far away. 3 You see me when I travel and when I rest at home. You know everything I do. 4 You know what I am going to say even before I say it, Lord. 5 You go before me and follow me. You place your hand of blessing on my head. 6 Such knowledge is too wonderful for me, too great for me to understand!
7 I can never escape from your Spirit! I can never get away from your presence! 8 If I go up to heaven, you are there; if I go down to the grave, you are there. 9 If I ride the wings of the morning, if I dwell by the farthest oceans, 10 even there your hand will guide me, and your strength will support me. 11 I could ask the darkness to hide me and the light around me to become night— 12 but even in darkness I cannot hide from you. To you the night shines as bright as day. Darkness and light are the same to you.
