Then he said to Thomas, "Put your finger here, and look at my hands. Put your hand into the wound in my side. Don't be faithless any longer. Believe!" John 20:27
It is easy to think about God’s faithfulness to the people around us. We can quickly identify how God is taking care of friends, family members, and even acquaintances. What is more challenging to see, however, is how God remains faithful to us, especially when we are walking through a difficult time or when we are waiting for God to work in a particular area of our lives. The truth is, however, God is always at work in our lives, even when we cannot see it. In fact, right now, today, He is working in our lives. Scripture teaches that He will never, ever give up on us if we have placed our faith in Him.
Jesus' disciple Thomas learned firsthand that God never gives up on His people in John 20. Our story today picks up after Jesus' death on the cross for the sins of the world and His resurrection. Scripture reveals that Jesus had revealed Himself to His disciples, but Thomas was not with them. When the disciples told Thomas that they had seen Jesus, Thomas said, “I won’t believe unless I see the nail wounds in His hands, put my fingers into them, and place my hand into the wound in His side” (verse 25). Thomas would not believe that Jesus had been raised from the dead without seeing physical proof that Jesus was alive. “Eight days later the disciples were together again, and this time, Thomas was with them” (verse 27). As Jesus appeared to His disciples, "He said to Thomas, 'Put your finger here, and look at my hands. Put your hand into the wound in my side. Don't be faithless any longer. Believe!'" (verse 27). What a remarkable moment this must have been for Thomas! Jesus was alive. Not only was Jesus alive, but Jesus made it a point to have this conversation with Thomas. Instead of rebuking Thomas's lack of faith, Jesus gently called Him to have faith because He was alive and still working, even though Thomas previously could not see how He was working.
Have you ever felt like Thomas, struggling to trust that God is working and faithful because you are having a hard time seeing evidence of His work and faithfulness? Perhaps you are going through a difficult time or have been praying for something for years without seeing evidence of God's answer. My friend, God is working in our lives every moment, even when we have moments where our faith waivers or we have questions. He is at work in our lives and in the world in ways we could never even imagine. He has always been faithful to us, and He will continue to be faithful. Will you trust Him today?
What is an area of your life where you are struggling to see God’s faithfulness in your life? Pray about that area to God right now. Ask God to work in that area today. Recognize that God will never give up on you, and let that truth give you confidence that He will continue to be faithful to you, even in the area where you are waiting for Him to work.
John 20:19-21
19 That Sunday evening the disciples were meeting behind locked doors because they were afraid of the Jewish leaders. Suddenly, Jesus was standing there among them! “Peace be with you,” he said. 20 As he spoke, he showed them the wounds in his hands and his side. They were filled with joy when they saw the Lord! 21 Again he said, “Peace be with you. As the Father has sent me, so I am sending you.”
