Purify me from my sins, and I will be clean; wash me, and I will be whiter than snow. Psalm 51:7
All week, we have focused on the severity of sin. Indeed, sin has grave consequences. It separates us from a holy God and leads to death. Because of these things, it must be taken seriously. As followers of Christ, our call is to confess our sin and turn away from it, living to obey God rather than living for our sinful nature. Scripture teaches that when we do confess our sins to God and turn to God, He will always forgive us, no longer holding our sins against us. What a powerful promise for us to claim!
King David wrote about God's extraordinary forgiveness in Psalm 51. This Psalm was written after David was confronted about his own sin. This Psalm is a prayer to God written by David. David began this Psalm by saying, “Have mercy on me, O God, because of your unfailing love. Because of your great compassion, blot out the stain of my sins” (verse 1). David immediately began this prayer by asking God for mercy and forgiveness. Clearly, he understood that God is compassionate and forgiving. He continued this Psalm, saying, “For I recognize my rebellion; it haunts me day and night” (verse 3). David was distraught over his sin and, in his distress, turned to God, the one he knew offered forgiveness and restoration. He prayed, "Purify me from my sins, and I will be clean; wash me, and I will be whiter than snow" (verse 7). Notice the confidence in David's words as he prayed. He did not pray, "Purify me from my sins and I might be clean; wash me, and I might be whiter than snow." He prayed confidently, knowing that God offers forgiveness. Not only did he know that God always offers forgiveness for all who turn to Him. He also knew that God forgives completely, holding no trace of our sin against us. This was the confidence that he prayed with, and it is the confidence that we can pray with.
My friend, you have a God who is merciful and quick to offer forgiveness when we turn to Him. When we confess our sins to Him and turn from them, He forgives us and no longer holds our sins against us. It is as if we are "whiter than snow." Because of God’s great forgiveness, you, like David, can walk confidently, knowing you have been forgiven fully if you have turned to Him for forgiveness. Praise God for His great, complete, and never-ending forgiveness when we turn to Him!
The truth that God offers forgiveness to all who turn to Him is something to celebrate. Make plans to praise Him and celebrate His forgiveness with us this weekend at one of our weekend services. Let’s join together and praise Him for all He has done for us, especially for His extravagant forgiveness He has shown each one of us! We can’t wait to see you there!

“God, as I remember Your mercy and grace, I worship You because…”
Psalm 51:1-19
1 Have mercy on me, O God, because of your unfailing love. Because of your great compassion, blot out the stain of my sins. 2 Wash me clean from my guilt. Purify me from my sin. 3 For I recognize my rebellion; it haunts me day and night. 4 Against you, and you alone, have I sinned; I have done what is evil in your sight. You will be proved right in what you say, and your judgment against me is just. 5 For I was born a sinner— yes, from the moment my mother conceived me. 6 But you desire honesty from the womb, teaching me wisdom even there.
7 Purify me from my sins, and I will be clean; wash me, and I will be whiter than snow. 8 Oh, give me back my joy again; you have broken me— now let me rejoice. 9 Don’t keep looking at my sins. Remove the stain of my guilt. 10 Create in me a clean heart, O God. Renew a loyal spirit within me. 11 Do not banish me from your presence, and don’t take your Holy Spirit from me.
12 Restore to me the joy of your salvation, and make me willing to obey you. 13 Then I will teach your ways to rebels, and they will return to you. 14 Forgive me for shedding blood, O God who saves; then I will joyfully sing of your forgiveness. 15 Unseal my lips, O Lord, that my mouth may praise you.
16 You do not desire a sacrifice, or I would offer one. You do not want a burnt offering. 17 The sacrifice you desire is a broken spirit. You will not reject a broken and repentant heart, O God. 18 Look with favor on Zion and help her; rebuild the walls of Jerusalem. 19 Then you will be pleased with sacrifices offered in the right spirit— with burnt offerings and whole burnt offerings. Then bulls will again be sacrificed on your altar.
