Get in the Game: Week 3 - Saturday

A person standing alone can be attacked and defeated, but two can stand back-to-back and conquer. Three are even better, for a triple-braided cord is not easily broken. Ecclesiastes 4:12

I am always grateful for the community of followers of Christ whom God has placed in my life, but I am profoundly grateful for them when I face the storms that life inevitably brings. You can probably relate. Life is difficult, and storms inevitably come. God gives us Christian community to weather the storms of life together.

Ecclesiastes chapter four explains the importance of living life in community with other people. Without living in community with others, he states that life is “meaningless and depressing” (verse 8). He then states that “two people are better than one, for they can help each other succeed” (verse 9). He continues writing about the importance of community by saying that “a person standing alone can be attacked and defeated, but two can stand back-to-back and conquer” (verse 12). You have found this to be true in your friendships, haven’t you? Your godly friendships make you stronger and feel more supported, don’t they? The truth is, we need each other because we need to rely on each other to help hold us up when the storms of life come.

Life brings all kinds of storms. These storms can often leave us feeling defeated, heartbroken, and disoriented. Having a community to walk with us makes all the difference. A community of people to weather the storms that life brings means encouragement, strength, and endurance.  Who walked with you through a storm you faced? Thank God for these incredible people who He provided in your community when you needed support. Who can you walk with through the storm they are facing?  Commit to supporting the people in your life who are facing a storm in the same way you have been supported, and ask God to help you as you support the people in your life facing storms.

Moving Toward Action

Do you know someone right now who is facing a difficult time? Reach out to them today and invite them to church. Your invitation will be a reminder that they are not alone. It will also be an invitation to bring their struggles to God.

Going Deeper

Ecclesiastes 4:1-12

1Again, I observed all the oppression that takes place under the sun. I saw the tears of the oppressed, with no one to comfort them. The oppressors have great power, and their victims are helpless. So I concluded that the dead are better off than the living. But most fortunate of all are those who are not yet born. For they have not seen all the evil that is done under the sun.

Then I observed that most people are motivated to success because they envy their neighbors. But this, too, is meaningless—like chasing the wind.

“Fools fold their idle hands,
    leading them to ruin.”

And yet,

“Better to have one handful with quietness
than two handfuls with hard work
    and chasing the wind.”

I observed yet another example of something meaningless under the sun. This is the case of a man who is all alone, without a child or a brother, yet who works hard to gain as much wealth as he can. But then he asks himself, “Who am I working for? Why am I giving up so much pleasure now?” It is all so meaningless and depressing.

Two people are better off than one, for they can help each other succeed. 10 If one person falls, the other can reach out and help. But someone who falls alone is in real trouble. 11 Likewise, two people lying close together can keep each other warm. But how can one be warm alone? 12 A person standing alone can be attacked and defeated, but two can stand back-to-back and conquer. Three are even better, for a triple-braided cord is not easily broken.
