How To Live A Life Of Purpose And Meaning: Tuesday

Turn my eyes from worthless things, and give me life through your word. Psalm 119:37

Whether we realize it or not, time is one of our most valuable commodities. We cannot earn more time. We cannot go back in time. We cannot regain the time that we lost. Unfortunately, many people today do not realize just how valuable time is. As a result, they waste it, freely giving away one of the most valuable commodities that they have. If we want to make the most of our lives, we must focus on making the most of every second that we are given. After all, every second we have is a gift from God and must be treated as valuable as it is.

The author of Psalm 119 wrote about the importance of making the most of his time. This passage of Scripture records a prayer from the Psalmist to God. In this passage of Scripture, the Psalmist wrote, “Turn my eyes from worthless things, and give me life through your word” (verse 37). Why did the Psalmist ask God to turn his eyes from worthless things? He made this request because he understood that we all move in the direction where our eyes are focused. I learned this when I learned to drive. My driving instructor told me to look to the left, and suddenly the car drifted to the left, where my eyes were focused. Then, he told me to look to the right, and the car drifted to the right. This was a valuable lesson for driving. It was also a valuable life lesson. We move in the direction where we are looking, and the Psalmist of Psalm 119 knew this. He did not want to focus on worthless things because he knew it would lead to wasting his time. He, like us, wanted to make the most of his time. After all, time is precious.

Instead of focusing on worthless things, the Psalmist of Psalm 119 wanted to focus on God’s word, which brings life. He knew that focusing on God’s word would help him make the most of his time, knowing that it would move Him toward obedience.

My friend, your time is precious. Your time is a gift. How do you want to spend it? Will you make the most of every second you are given, focusing on knowing Christ and making Christ known? There is nothing better you can do with your time than this. There is nothing better you can do with your life than this.

Moving Toward Action

Your challenge today is to think about how you are spending your time. How are you spending your time well? How are you wasting your time? After evaluating how you spend your time, choose one thing to let go of this week that wastes your time so that you can make the most of each moment.

Going Deeper

Psalm 119:33-48

Teach me your decrees, O Lord;
    I will keep them to the end.
34 Give me understanding and I will obey your instructions;
    I will put them into practice with all my heart.
35 Make me walk along the path of your commands,
    for that is where my happiness is found.
36 Give me an eagerness for your laws
    rather than a love for money!
37 Turn my eyes from worthless things,
    and give me life through your word.
38 Reassure me of your promise,
    made to those who fear you.
39 Help me abandon my shameful ways;
    for your regulations are good.
40 I long to obey your commandments!
    Renew my life with your goodness.

Waw

41 Lord, give me your unfailing love,
    the salvation that you promised me.
42 Then I can answer those who taunt me,
    for I trust in your word.
43 Do not snatch your word of truth from me,
    for your regulations are my only hope.
44 I will keep on obeying your instructions
    forever and ever.
45 I will walk in freedom,
    for I have devoted myself to your commandments.
46 I will speak to kings about your laws,
    and I will not be ashamed.
47 How I delight in your commands!
    How I love them!
48 I honor and love your commands.
    I meditate on your decrees.
