Managing Your Mind: Tuesday

You used to live in sin, just like the rest of the world, obeying the devil—the commander of the powers in the unseen world. Ephesians 2:2a

In our Bible study yesterday, we were reminded that God is looking for fully devoted followers of Christ. There is no room for His people to have divided loyalty. He wants our whole hearts. Throughout the rest of this week, we are going to look to Scripture to learn about attributes of fully devoted followers of Christ. Today, specifically, we are going to see that fully devoted followers of Christ do not see reading God's word as a duty, but instead view it as a delight.

The book of Psalms opens with a call to delight in God’s word in chapter 1. The Psalmist begins this chapter, saying, “Oh, the joys of those who do not follow the advice of the wicked, or stand around with sinners, or join in with mockers. But they delight in the law of the Lord, meditating on it day and night” (verses 1-2). Those who choose to find delight in God’s word and reflect on it “day and night” instead of the evils of this world experience deep joy. These people who delight in God’s word and meditate on it, the Psalmist writes, “are like trees planted along the riverbank, bearing fruit each season. Their leaves never wither, and they prosper in all they do” (verse 3). Simply put, those who delight in God’s word prosper. They are strong and their faith is unwavering, regardless of the season they are facing. When we delight in God’s word, God changes us. We become more and more like Him.

My friend, God’s word is a gift to us. It brings life, truth, guidance, encouragement, and so much more. The question is, do we recognize what a gift it is to us? Do we delight in it? In our world today, Scripture is more accessible than ever before. May we, every day, pick up God’s word with great delight, may we meditate on it all day and evening, and may we remain steadfast and strong in our faith as a result.

Moving Toward Action

As you read the verses listed below in the Going Deeper section, delight in God's word as you read them. Remember what a gift God’s word is to us. He went to great lengths to communicate His word to us. Choose to read each word with delight and anticipation, eager to read what He has to say to you.

Going Deeper

 Psalm 1:1-6

Oh, the joys of those who do not
follow the advice of the wicked,
    or stand around with sinners,
    or join in with mockers.
But they delight in the law of the Lord,
meditating on it day and night.
They are like trees planted along the riverbank,
    bearing fruit each season.
Their leaves never wither,
and they prosper in all they do.

But not the wicked!
They are like worthless chaff, scattered by the wind.
They will be condemned at the time of judgment.
Sinners will have no place among the godly.
For the Lord watches over the path of the godly,
but the path of the wicked leads to destruction.
