As we heard during the weekend message, the reminder that Jesus will return one day evokes a range of emotions. For some, uncertainty is at the forefront of emotions when they think about the return of Jesus. Others feel excited as they consider Jesus’ return. As we look to Scripture, we find that followers of Christ have nothing to fear about the return of Jesus. In fact, during the weekend message, we heard that Jesus made it clear that in light of His returning, His followers can look to the future with overwhelming peace.
In John 14, as Jesus spent some of His last moments with His disciples before His death and resurrection, He taught them that His desire for them was peace. He said to them, “Don’t let your hearts be troubled. Trust in God, and trust also in me” (verse 1). This was an important message for them to hear. They were about to see Jesus arrested and brutally killed on a cross. As they walked through the next few days, they would need to hold on to Jesus’ words to hold on to His peace, which was available to them. Why? Because they had faith in Jesus. They had seen Jesus raise a man named Lazarus from the dead. They would soon see Jesus rise from the grave, proving that He is God and that He has power over sin, death, and the grave. Even after His resurrection and ascension to Heaven, Jesus’ disciples would need to hold on to His words. You see, the religious leaders would do everything possible to keep the Jesus movement from spreading, including threatening and persecuting Christ followers. Amidst the difficulties, trials, and persecution that would come, they would need to hold on to peace from Christ, who, as He explained to them in this passage of Scripture, was “going to prepare a place for [them]” with Him forever one day (verse 2). After all, He is “the way, the truth, and the life,” and in Him we can have hope for an eternity with Him forever (verse 6).
The peace Jesus offered to His disciples is available to you today, too. Amidst all of the pain, difficulties, and suffering that comes from living in this world, you can have peace, knowing that following Him is the way to eternal life. He has power over everything, including sin, death, and the grave. As a result, you can have peace. After all, what is there to fear if your God has power over sin and death?
Sometimes our life’s circumstances leave us feeling anything but peace. Even still, the peace of Christ is available to us as we rest in the hope that one day, He will redeem and restore everything. Take a few moments to pray. As you pray, thank God for His peace, which is far greater than anything this world can offer. Ask Him to give you a spirit of peace as you seek to honor Him by the way you live your life.

“Don’t let your hearts be troubled. Trust in God, and trust also in me. 2 There is more than enough room in my Father’s home.[a] If this were not so, would I have told you that I am going to prepare a place for you?[b] 3 When everything is ready, I will come and get you, so that you will always be with me where I am. 4 And you know the way to where I am going.”
5 “No, we don’t know, Lord,” Thomas said. “We have no idea where you are going, so how can we know the way?”
6 Jesus told him, “I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one can come to the Father except through me. 7 If you had really known me, you would know who my Father is.[c] From now on, you do know him and have seen him!”
8 Philip said, “Lord, show us the Father, and we will be satisfied.”
9 Jesus replied, “Have I been with you all this time, Philip, and yet you still don’t know who I am? Anyone who has seen me has seen the Father! So why are you asking me to show him to you? 10 Don’t you believe that I am in the Father and the Father is in me? The words I speak are not my own, but my Father who lives in me does his work through me. 11 Just believe that I am in the Father and the Father is in me. Or at least believe because of the work you have seen me do.
12 “I tell you the truth, anyone who believes in me will do the same works I have done, and even greater works, because I am going to be with the Father. 13 You can ask for anything in my name, and I will do it, so that the Son can bring glory to the Father. 14 Yes, ask me for anything in my name, and I will do it!
