So let’s not get tired of doing what is good. At just the right time we will reap a harvest of blessing if we don’t give up. Galatians 6:9
I do not know much about gardening, but I do know that it takes time. I know you cannot plant a seed, water it, and then come back the next day to find a fully grown plant. Instead, a seed must be watered and receive proper sunlight each day, and over time, it will grow into a fully mature plant. This concept is true of our daily acts of faithfulness as we seek to live our lives for God. Scripture tells us that the small, unseen by anyone else but us and God, steps of faithfulness each and every day will one day have a profound impact for eternity. We are sowing seeds now, but one day, we will see the fully grown fruit if we remain faithful. As a result, every moment we are given on earth is an opportunity to make an impact for Christ.
In his search for significance and meaning, Solomon discovered that we have only one try with the short lives we have been given, so we must steward them well. He wrote in this passage of Scripture, “Whatever you do, do well. For when you go to the grave, there will be no work or planning or knowledge or wisdom” (verse 10). In other words, this life on earth will not last, so we would be wise to make investments, small and big, in the things of eternity and steward every moment that God has given us on earth well.
We can learn even more about stewarding every moment God has given us well in Galatians 6, where Paul encourages us to leverage our lives here on earth to make an impact for Christ. He wrote in Galatians 6, “You will always harvest what you plant. Those who live only to satisfy their one sinful nature will harvest decay and death from that sinful nature. But those who live to please the Spirit will harvest everlasting life from the Spirit” (verses 7-8). If we live for the things of the world, we will reap decay and death, because these things will ultimately lead us down that path. If we, however, seek to live for the Spirit instead of this world, we will find “everlasting life” because God and His kingdom are eternal. Paul continued, saying, “So let’s not get tired of doing what is good. At just the right time we will reap a harvest of blessing if we don’t give up” (verse 9). What is Paul telling us here? “Keep going! Keep taking those small steps of faithfulness each and every day. After all, we are sowing seeds each day, and one day, we will “reap a harvest of blessing.” That means that every day, every moment, and every opportunity to honor God by the way we live our lives, rather than living for this world, matters. In light of this truth, Paul wrote, “Therefore, whenever we have the opportunity, we should do good to everyone–especially to those in the family of faith” (verse 10).
Every step you take today, both large and small, is an opportunity to invest in the things of eternity. Will you commit to doing good “whenever [you] have the opportunity?” Your faithfulness will not go unnoticed, and one day, you will “reap a harvest of blessing” from every seed of faithfulness and obedience that you planted, day in and day out. Today may feel like an average Thursday, but you have the opportunity to “do good” today and build the kingdom of God. Your harvest is grown out of the small seeds of faith and obedience you have sown on average Thursdays just like today. Choose to make every moment you are given today count for eternity starting today.
In what ways have you been giving in to monotony, living as if it does not matter how you live day to day, instead of leveraging everything you have with excellence to seek to have an impact for Christ? Confess that monotony to God now. Acknowledge that you understand that every moment you have is an opportunity to make an impact for Him, and commit to letting go of monotony in your pursuit to know him and make Him known today.
“God, as I seek to honor you today, use me to…”
Galatians 6:1-18
1Dear brothers and sisters, if another believer is overcome by some sin, you who are godly should gently and humbly help that person back onto the right path. And be careful not to fall into the same temptation yourself. 2 Share each other’s burdens, and in this way obey the law of Christ. 3 If you think you are too important to help someone, you are only fooling yourself. You are not that important.
4 Pay careful attention to your own work, for then you will get the satisfaction of a job well done, and you won’t need to compare yourself to anyone else. 5 For we are each responsible for our own conduct.
6 Those who are taught the word of God should provide for their teachers, sharing all good things with them.
7 Don’t be misled—you cannot mock the justice of God. You will always harvest what you plant. 8 Those who live only to satisfy their own sinful nature will harvest decay and death from that sinful nature. But those who live to please the Spirit will harvest everlasting life from the Spirit. 9 So let’s not get tired of doing what is good. At just the right time we will reap a harvest of blessing if we don’t give up. 10 Therefore, whenever we have the opportunity, we should do good to everyone—especially to those in the family of faith.
11 Notice what large letters i use as i write these closing words in my own handwriting.
12 Those who are trying to force you to be circumcised want to look good to others. They don’t want to be persecuted for teaching that the cross of Christ alone can save. 13 And even those who advocate circumcision don’t keep the whole law themselves. They only want you to be circumcised so they can boast about it and claim you as their disciples.
14 As for me, may I never boast about anything except the cross of our Lord Jesus Christ. Because of that cross, my interest in this world has been crucified, and the world’s interest in me has also died. 15 It doesn’t matter whether we have been circumcised or not. What counts is whether we have been transformed into a new creation. 16 May God’s peace and mercy be upon all who live by this principle; they are the new people of God.
17 From now on, don’t let anyone trouble me with these things. For I bear on my body the scars that show I belong to Jesus.
18 Dear brothers and sisters, may the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ be with your spirit. Amen.
