What shall we say about such wonderful things as these? If God is for us, who can ever be against us? Romans 8:31
For over a month in our Bible study together, we have been studying Romans 8, a passage of Scripture that gives followers of Christ so many reasons to hope. Throughout this passage of Scripture, Paul teaches that those who have placed their faith in Christ have new lives in Christ and are no longer controlled by their sinful nature; they are children of God, and they have hope that God can bring good out of any situation, even suffering. For those of us who grew up reading our Bibles and going to church, this is not new news. If these teachings from Romans 8 are familiar to you, imagine that you were hearing these truths for the first time. They are nothing short of breathtaking. These truths have changed the course of history. As Paul brought Romans 8 to an end, he asked the question, “What shall we say about such wonderful things as these?” (verse 31). In other words, Paul asked, “How do we respond to such breathtakingly beautiful truths?” His immediate response: We have a God who is for us.
In response to Paul’s question, “What shall we say about such wonderful things as these?” in Romans 8, Paul answered, “If God is for us, who can ever be against us?” (verse 31). The implied answer to this question is, “No one can ever be against us.” What a powerful statement! We have a God who not only loves us and wants to have a relationship with us, but also is for us, supporting us and helping us live in a way that honors Him. Even more, because God is for us, there is nothing at all that could ever be against us. Nothing, not even our enemies, can be against us. Our life’s circumstances cannot be against us because God is for us.
Perhaps Paul wrote Romans 8:31 with Psalm 118 in mind. In this Psalm, the Psalmist wrote these words, “The Lord is for me, so I will have no fear. What can mere people do to me?” (verse 6). The answer to the Psalmist’s question in this verse is, “People could do nothing to the Psalmist.” As a result, he had no fear, even amidst trials and uncertainties. The Psalmist continued writing, “Yes, the Lord is for me; He will help me” (verse 7). David did not fear because He knew that God was for him and with him. This knowledge quieted his fears and boosted his confidence. This is what it means to believe that God is for us.
We have a God who is for His people, including you. God is for you today. You do not have to fear or worry. Instead, you can walk confidently, secure in His great love for you. After all, His love makes all the difference.
We have a God who is “for us.” Is there an area of your life where you need the reminder that God is for you? Bring it before God today. Ask Him to continue to walk with you and to work in that area. As you pray, pray with confidence, knowing that your God is for you.

Psalm 118:1-29
1Give thanks to the Lord, for he is good! His faithful love endures forever.
2 Let all Israel repeat: “His faithful love endures forever.” 3 Let Aaron’s descendants, the priests, repeat: “His faithful love endures forever.” 4 Let all who fear the Lord repeat: “His faithful love endures forever.”
5 In my distress I prayed to the Lord, and the Lord answered me and set me free. 6 The Lord is for me, so I will have no fear. What can mere people do to me? 7 Yes, the Lord is for me; he will help me. I will look in triumph at those who hate me. 8 It is better to take refuge in the Lord than to trust in people. 9 It is better to take refuge in the Lord than to trust in princes.
10 Though hostile nations surrounded me, I destroyed them all with the authority of the Lord. 11 Yes, they surrounded and attacked me, but I destroyed them all with the authority of the Lord. 12 They swarmed around me like bees; they blazed against me like a crackling fire. But I destroyed them all with the authority of the Lord. 13 My enemies did their best to kill me, but the Lord rescued me. 14 The Lord is my strength and my song; he has given me victory. 15 Songs of joy and victory are sung in the camp of the godly. The strong right arm of the Lord has done glorious things! 16 The strong right arm of the Lord is raised in triumph. The strong right arm of the Lord has done glorious things! 17 I will not die; instead, I will live to tell what the Lord has done. 18 The Lord has punished me severely, but he did not let me die.
19 Open for me the gates where the righteous enter, and I will go in and thank the Lord. 20 These gates lead to the presence of the Lord, and the godly enter there. 21 I thank you for answering my prayer and giving me victory!
22 The stone that the builders rejected has now become the cornerstone. 23 This is the Lord’s doing, and it is wonderful to see. 24 This is the day the Lord has made. We will rejoice and be glad in it. 25 Please, Lord, please save us. Please, Lord, please give us success. 26 Bless the one who comes in the name of the Lord. We bless you from the house of the Lord. 27 The Lord is God, shining upon us. Take the sacrifice and bind it with cords on the altar. 28 You are my God, and I will praise you! You are my God, and I will exalt you!
29 Give thanks to the Lord, for he is good! His faithful love endures forever.
