BREAK THE ICE

When was a time in your life you did something wrong as a kid and immediately felt bad about it?

SMALL GROUP QUESTIONS

1. Why does it help when people feel bad they have done something wrong? What is the danger if they don’t feel anything?

2. Read John 16:5-8. Why did Jesus say it was better for His followers if He went away?

John 16:5-8

5 “But now I am going away to the one who sent me, and not one of you is asking where I am going 6 Instead, you grieve because of what I’ve told you. 7 But in fact, it is best for you that I go away, because if I don’t, the Advocate won’t come. If I do go away, then I will send him to you. 8 And when he comes, he will convict the world of its sin, and of God’s righteousness, and of the coming judgment.

3. How does the Holy Spirit help followers of Jesus, based on these verses?

4. Is there a time in your life when you have experienced the Holy Spirit convicting you of sin? What happened?

5. Look up the word “advocate” in the dictionary. How does this word apply to the Holy Spirit?

6. Have you ever experienced the Holy Spirit helping you or being your advocate?

7. Read 2 Timothy 1:7. How does the power of the Holy Spirit give you confidence as you face the spiritual warfare going on every day?

For God has not given us a spirit of fear and timidity, but of power, love, and self-discipline.

8. What is one area of your life right now where you need the Holy Spirit’s help?

MOVING FORWARD

When we need help, the Holy Spirit can be our counselor, the one we lean on. He convicts us and shows us the path we need to take. The question is, will you listen? Many people ignore what God has to say, believing it is just in their head. They go their own way instead of following the lead of the Holy Spirit. This week as you go to school, work, or just at home with your family, ask that the Holy Spirit will lead you. You may want to identify some areas that you are tempted by that you need Him to give you strength. You may need to think through a place where you need His power to take a stand with your friends or online. Talk to your group about some ways that you can ask God to lead you through the Holy Spirit this week. Then pray for one another as you walk into these battles.
