BREAK THE ICE
Who has been a true friend in your life? How has their friendship impacted you?
SMALL GROUP QUESTIONS
1. What characteristics are people looking for in friends today? Are these types of friends easy or difficult to find? Why?
2. Read Ecclesiastes 4:9-12. What is the picture communicated in these verses?
Ecclesiastes 4:9-13
9 Two people are better off than one, for they can help each other succeed. 10 If one person falls, the other can reach out and help. But someone who falls alone is in real trouble. 11 Likewise, two people lying close together can keep each other warm. But how can one be warm alone? 12 A person standing alone can be attacked and defeated, but two can stand back-to-back and conquer. Three are even better, for a triple-braided cord is not easily broken.
3. What is the danger of not having good friends?
4. Read Acts 2:42-47. What elements of a good small group do you see in this passage of scripture?
Acts 2:42-47
42 All the believers devoted themselves to the apostles’ teaching, and to fellowship, and to sharing in meals (including the Lord’s Supper[a]), and to prayer.
43 A deep sense of awe came over them all, and the apostles performed many miraculous signs and wonders. 44 And all the believers met together in one place and shared everything they had. 45 They sold their property and possessions and shared the money with those in need. 46 They worshiped together at the Temple each day, met in homes for the Lord’s Supper, and shared their meals with great joy and generosity[b]— 47 all the while praising God and enjoying the goodwill of all the people. And each day the Lord added to their fellowship those who were being saved.
5. What happens when we come to our small group open and honest about our struggles?
6. What is one area you are struggling with or need help with?
7. Read John 13:34-35. How can your group practice showing love to each other?
John 13:34-35
34 So now I am giving you a new commandment: Love each other. Just as I have loved you, you should love each other. 35 Your love for one another will prove to the world that you are my disciples.”
MOVING FORWARD
One of the most important parts of a small group is consistency. If you come every once in a while to group, you will not connect into real relationships. The best of relationships take time to develop with regular meetings. That is why the early church met weekly in homes together. What if your group made a commitment to not miss the next 6 weeks of small groups? Talk as a group about what is realistic and how you can be more consistent. Write up a commitment as a group and sign it together this week as a pact that you will be consistent. Then close your group praying for one another.
