BREAK THE ICE

What comes to mind when you think about baptism?

SMALL GROUP QUESTIONS

1. Why do you think baptism is so important for followers of Jesus?

2. Read Matthew 3:13-17. What is significant about Jesus choosing to be baptized?

 Matthew 3:13-17

¹³ Then Jesus went from Galilee to the Jordan River to be baptized by John. ¹⁴ But John tried to talk him out of it. “I am the one who needs to be baptized by you,” he said, “so why are you coming to me?”

¹⁵ But Jesus said, “It should be done, for we must carry out all that God requires.” So John agreed to baptize him.

¹⁶ After his baptism, as Jesus came up out of the water, the heavens were opened and he saw the Spirit of God descending like a dove and settling on him. ¹⁷ And a voice from heaven said, “This is my dearly loved Son, who brings me great joy.”

3. Why do you think Jesus chose to be baptized?

4. Read Romans 6:4. What does baptism represent?

Romans 6:4

For we died and were buried with Christ by baptism. And just as Christ was raised from the dead by the glorious power of the Father, now we also may live new lives.

5. What misunderstandings do you think people have today about what baptism means?

6. What things do you think hold most people back from getting baptized? Why?

7. Have you been baptized before? If so, what was your experience? If not, is anything holding you back? What is it?

MOVING FORWARD

As we end our conversation today, there are several steps we have the option to take.

1. Commit your life to Christ. Before baptism we have to make a decision for Christ and commit our lives to him. If you have never committed your life to Christ, and you are ready to take that step, today is your day. Talk to your small group leader after group about taking this most important step. If you have not taken that step and you are not ready, you can talk to your small group leader after group about what might be holding you back and any questions you have.

2. Get baptized. Maybe you have committed your life to Christ, but you have never been baptized. Our encouragement today is to make a decision to get baptized, showing everyone that you have given your life to Christ.

3. Share your faith with someone else. If you have committed your life to Christ and been baptized, think of one person you can share your faith with and tell them all about what Christ has done in your life. How can you reach out to them this week to share about how Jesus changed your life and brought you from life to death, just like baptism represents.
