Why Am I Here? - Week 2, Day 1

Day 1: What will the character of my life be?

The second question you have to have a great answer to is:
What will be the character of your life?

God is far more interested in who you are rather than what you do.
Let's read that again. God is far more interested in who you are rather than what you do.

How you treat other people matters greatly to God. How you serve other people, care for other people, your integrity, keeping your word, standing for what is true and right matters big time to God.

When you gave your life to Jesus, God was bent on the idea that you and I would become more and more like Jesus.

"For from the very beginning, God decided that those who came to Him…should become like His Son." Romans 8:29 (LB)

What is Jesus like? In Galatians 5:22-23, we find what the Bible calls the fruits of the Spirit. We've been studying these for the past few weeks. If you have Christ in your life, then there should be evidence of this fact in your actions. Just like fruit gives evidence of what kind of tree it is, our character gives evidence that shows if we are like Christ or not.

Galatians 5:22-23 says, "But when the Holy Spirit controls our lives, he will produce this kind of fruit in us: love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, [23] gentleness, and self-control.

Jesus had all the fruits of the spirit. He was completely loving, completely patient, completely kind (you get the idea).

How does God develop these types of qualities in our life? Simple. God puts you in the opposite circumstance.

If God wants you to have patience, He will put you in the slowest line at the super Wal-Mart, standing between talkative women and three screaming children.

If God wants you to have love, He will place in your life unloving people. Loud, rude, obnoxious neighbors with big dogs that won't stop barking.

Why does he do that? God is more concerned about your character than he is about your comfort. Let me say that again. God is more concerned about your character than he is about your comfort. That's the direct opposite for us. We are more concerned about our comfort than our character. In fact, we will go beyond the call of duty to protect or gain more comfort, even giving away our character to have it. Who are you becoming? Are you becoming more and more like Jesus?

Time Out:

1. Look at that verse in Galatians again that lists out the fruit of the spirit. Which one do you need more of?

2. Are you more like Jesus today than you were six months ago? Are you more loving, patient, and kind, etc.?

3. Why does our character matter more than our comfort to God?

4. Do you treat other people the way Jesus treated them? Can people see Jesus in you?

"You can make many plans, but the Lord's purpose will prevail." Proverbs 19:21
