Those of us who grew up in church are very familiar with the hymn, “Jesus Loves Me.” In fact, even if you did not grow up in church, chances are that you have at least some familiarity with the song. The refrain to this beautiful hymn says, “Yes, Jesus loves me! Yes, Jesus loves me! Yes, Jesus loves me! The Bible tells me so.” Parents who follow Jesus teach this song to their children at an early age. Why? They understand that knowing that we are loved by God is one of the most important truths anyone could ever understand. Somehow, as adults, our understanding of love becomes distorted by this world, and we start believing that God’s love must be earned, or is only present if our life’s circumstances are good. Today, we are going to turn to Scripture to read about God’s freely given, never-giving-up love for each one of us in order to remind our hearts and minds that we are loved by God simply because He loves us.
Who has shown you unconditional love here on this earth? How?
1. Read Romans 8:31-34. Why can we be confident in God’s love for us, according to this passage of Scripture?

What shall we say about such wonderful things as these? If God is for us, who can ever be against us? 32Since he did not spare even his own Son but gave him up for us all, won’t he also give us everything else? 33Who dares accuse us whom God has chosen for his own? No one—for God himself has given us right standing with himself. 34Who then will condemn us? No one—for Christ Jesus died for us and was raised to life for us, and he is sitting in the place of honor at God’s right hand, pleading for us.
2. Describe the deep impact of God’s love for His people based on this passage of Scripture.
3. Read Romans 8:35-39. What does the apostle Paul teach about God’s love during our difficult times? How does the understanding that Paul went through many trials and difficulties as he spread the name of Christ everywhere he went impact your understanding of this teaching from Paul?

Can anything ever separate us from Christ’s love? Does it mean he no longer loves us if we have trouble or calamity, or are persecuted, or hungry, or destitute, or in danger, or threatened with death? 36(As the Scriptures say, “For your sake we are killed every day; we are being slaughtered like sheep.”) 37No, despite all these things, overwhelming victory is ours through Christ, who loved us. And I am convinced that nothing can ever separate us from God’s love. Neither death nor life, neither angels nor demons, neither our fears for today nor our worries about tomorrow—not even the powers of hell can separate us from God’s love. 39No power in the sky above or in the earth below—indeed, nothing in all creation will ever be able to separate us from the love of God that is revealed in Christ Jesus our Lord.
4. In verses 37-39, Paul lists several things that cannot separate us from God’s love. Look back at that list. What does that list specifically reveal about the power of God’s love for us?

3. How would fully believing and embracing God’s love for you impact how you live day-to-day?
God’s great love for us cannot be kept to ourselves. Who is someone you know who needs the hope of Christ? Our stories are among the most compelling tools for sharing our faith. For the next few minutes, practice sharing your two-minute stories with your group. Either take time to write out your two-minute stories, which consist of three parts: what your life was like before Christ, how you came to know Christ, and the difference Christ has made in your life, or break up into groups of two or three, and take turns sharing your two-minute stories. Then, come back together and share one person in your life whom you are praying for to come to experience the hope of Christ. Commit to sharing your two-minute story with them this week.
We acknowledged in our Bible study together that God’s love is unlike any kind of love we will experience on earth, from the worst to the greatest examples we could encounter. It is infinitely greater. For the next few moments, turn to Scripture to see what Scripture teaches about how God’s love far exceeds earthly love. Specifically, take a look at what Scripture teaches about God’s love: it is unconditional, sacrificial, and that of a perfect Heavenly Father.
The love offered by many humans is conditional. They will love someone as long as they behave well or they have something to offer them. The moment mistakes are made or that person can no longer offer them something, they walk away. This is not the case with God. God’s love is not based on our performance or what we have to offer Him. God’s love is unconditional. It is freely given simply because He loves us.
1. Read Isaiah 54:10. This passage of Scripture was a message to the people of Israel that God gave to Isaiah to tell them.

For the mountains may move and the hills disappear, but even then my faithful love for you will remain. My covenant of blessing will never be broken,” says the Lord, who has mercy on you.
2. How is God’s love different from the love that we often experience on this earth?

While we certainly have examples of selfless love here on earth, much of the love experienced on this earth is selfish. After all, our human nature teaches us to look out for ourselves and ourselves alone. God’s love is completely different. God’s love is sacrificial. When we were lost in our sin, God did everything to rescue us.
1. Read 1st John 4:9-12.

For God showed how much he loved us by sending his one and only Son into the world so that we might have eternal life through him. 10This is real love—not that we loved God, but that he loved us and sent his Son as a sacrifice to take away our sins. 11Dear friends, since God loved us that much, we surely ought to love each other. 12No one has ever seen God. But if we love each other, God lives in us, and his love is brought to full expression in us.

We have learned throughout our study of Romans 8 that God is a perfect Heavenly Father, and that we are, therefore, children of God. This truth has something to teach us about His love for us. Because He is our perfect Heavenly Father, He loves us with the love of a perfect father. There is no greater example of love than this.

See how very much our Father loves us, for he calls us his children, and that is what we are! But the people who belong to this world don’t recognize that we are God’s children because they don’t know him. 2 Dear friends, we are already God’s children, but he has not yet shown us what we will be like when Christ appears. But we do know that we will be like him, for we will see him as he really is. 3 And all who have this eager expectation will keep themselves pure, just as he is pure.
